Case Study: HALO BassiNest Swivel SleeperThe only bassinet that rotates and swivels to bring baby to you
Identifying a Trend: Co-sleeping
HALO approached us about working together on baby-safety product innovations. In our wide-ranging discussions, co-sleeping — parents and infants sharing beds – was explored.
The concept was simple: Bring the safety of a bassinet into an adult bed in a way that’s comfortable for babies and parents. But how? The wheeled tables commonly used over hospital beds provided a starting point for the designers. But the BassiNest had to hold more weight and move in more ways. The upper portion, holding the baby, had to reach over the parents’ bed without tipping. The base had to be wide enough to provide balance, while also maintaining a low profile to fit under beds. Finding the sweet spot required a lot of testing and refining.
The next phase of product development and testing focused on creating a truly pleasant sleep experience for parents and babies. We made it possible to rotate the bassinet 360° independently of the frame, for safety in lifting a baby. The mesh sides provide visibility and can be pushed down for ease in lifting or comforting an infant. We also studied sleep positions to determine the appropriate shape and fabrics for the bassinet. Finally we added electronics — a nightlight, timer, soothing nature sounds and lullabies, and gentle vibration setting.
The Halo Bassinest Hospital Series is now available for Hospital Birth Centers as a way to ensure a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience for families during their stay.
The HALO BassiNest won an Innovation Award and was a Judges’ Pick at the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association show in Las Vegas.
Due to an array of challenges, the project moved up and down our Vertical Innovation™ process, from design to insights to engineering to prototyping, before the BassiNest was ready for manufacturing.
