Position Available: Senior Product Designer

We are seeking a creative and experienced senior industrial designer to join our team.

Working closely between product management, R&D, and sales, the Senior Industrial Designer is responsible for driving and managing all aspects of new product design.

Candidates must have proven experience in consumer goods and brand strategy, be self-motivated, and be comfortable in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment.

The ideal candidate would:

  • Be a passionate, seasoned designer with a strong sense of design
  • Have the ability to multi-task
  • Produce high-level solutions in diverse product categories while maintaining brand integrity
  • Be effective in creating product strategy for our clients

Candidate should have the following:

  • A minimum of 10+ years of experience (15 years preferred) as an industrial product designer (Bachelors degree in Industrial Design)
  • 3+ years of experience with project management
  • Extensive project management and client contact experience
  • A diverse portfolio of intuitive products that demonstrate ability to visually describe a concept or process
  • Experience that spans consumer, medical, and industrial products

Specific Skills:

  • Sound understanding of core manufacturing processes and their limitations
  • Ability to evaluate design ideas based on factors such as appearance, design-function relationships, serviceability, materials and methods, engineering, application, budget, price, production costs, methods of products, market characteristics, and client specifications
  • Experience interfacing with overseas manufacturing
  • Sketching skills to visually communicate design concepts
  • Exposure to consumer research techniques and practices
  • Superior skills in relevant software applications (Alias, Photoshop) in order to develop designs in two and three dimensions
  • Ability to work well with others

Position Available: Pro/E Mechanical Designer

We are seeking a creative and experienced Pro/E Mechanical Designer to join our team.

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in Pro/E Wildfire 3 or later
  • Strong experience with sculpted and complex surfacing
  • Experience with plastic injection molded parts design
  • Consumer product design oriented experience preferred
  • Self driven with a creative approach to open ended design instructions

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with CAM for CNC milling

Position Available: Associate Mechanical Engineer

We are seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer who is a self-directed, fast learner with a creative and dynamic skill set.

Required Skills:

  • Application of first principles engineering in the creation of new product concepts.
  • Experimentation, including:
    • Experiment design to support technical feasibility studies of new theories and product concepts.
    • Working knowledge of standard laboratory instrumentation for the measurement mechanical, electrical, chemical and optical properties.
    • Ability to identify key performance characteristics in a design or concept and design a controlled experiment to test, evaluate, and compare these characteristics.
    • Basic statistical knowledge combined with a working knowledge of formulas, statistical functions, and presentation quality graphing within Microsoft Excel.
    • Ability to summarize and convey test results and design implication to non-technical personnel.
  • Ability to utilize solid modeling CAD as a tool for:
    • Establishing preliminary design parameters.
    • Supporting CAM and fast-prototyping processes.
    • Supporting mechanical design professionals in the preparation of detailed production designs.
    • Conveying concepts and ideas to partners and clients
  • Ability to function within NS Design’s prototype shop, including:
    • Safe operation of manual lathes, mills and saws in the completion of simple tasks as may be required in the final assembly and/or minor alteration of prototypes.
    • Coordination with shop personnel.
    • General shop practices and procedures.
  • Basic understanding of the application of electronics in products and the ability to specify critical control, sensor and user interface requirements.
  • Basic understanding of discrete part product manufacturing, including:
    • Product cost bill-of-materials.
    • Basic cost factors of a mass production environment, particularly one that integrates injection molded parts, stamped sheet metal parts, packaging, purchased components and labor.
    • Critical design limitations presented by key manufacturing methods (injection molding, casting, stamping, thermal forming, blow molding, rotational molding and extrusion).
  • Interpersonal skills adequate to:
    • Be able to convey status, milestones, difficulties and design/functionality restrictions to non-technical individuals.
    • Tactfully and respectfully interface with non-technical client personnel.
    • Interface with global manufacturing partners.
    • Interface with NS Design’s industrial design, modeling, marketing and graphics groups and assure that their input to the product development process is fully considered and properly implemented in your work.
  • Ability to innovate, including the ability to sustain confidence in a product development direction that may have no comparative benchmarks in existing products.
  • Ability to conceptualize, evaluate, summarize and rank multiple solutions and ultimately recommend a final solution to a design or engineering problem.

Skills (highly desirable):

  • High proficiency in Pro/Engineer Wildfire 4 & 5, including surfacing.
  • Experience in the use of FEA for stress, thermal and mold flow analysis.
  • Ability to generate CAM files, particularly SurfCAM, and set-up & execute CNC machining jobs.
  • Ability to design & construct simple electrical and electronic circuits to support developmental engineering and prototyping projects.
  • Working knowledge of mass production environments in overseas locations.
  • Prior experience working with and coordinating with end manufacturers.
